다음 대답은 언제나 긍정으로 (22/6/19)
아르카비스는 당황했다. 주점에서 일하게 된 뒤로 약속과 다른 일이 오늘따라 연속으로 벌어지고 있었다. 지명이라니. 여기가 그런 술집도 아니고. 뭣보다 그도 부른 사람도 똑같이 남자인데다. 믿을 수가 없어. 아르카비스는 자꾸만 돌발 행위를 일으키는 손님, 에쉬레스토를 곁눈질했다. 이 주점에서 일하게 된 지는 고작 이제 2주 째, 그리고 그가 에쉬레스토를 상대하게 된 것은 겨우 3일 전 일이었다. 처음 마주친 그 순간부터 찍혀버린 줄은 상상도 하지 못하고.
“얘는 종업원으로 쓰는 애가 아니라니까.”
“어쨌든 여기서 일하는 건 맞잖아?”
가게 오너가 어떻게든 빼내주려고 노력하는 것을 보고 아르카비스는 저도 모르게 두 손에 힘을 주었다. 제발 좀. 그러나 에쉬레스토 또한 좀처럼 물러날 생각이 없어 보였다. 두 사람의 실랑이는 아르카비스의 눈앞에서 오래도록 이어졌다. 하다하다 별 얘기가 다 나왔다.
“쟤 술 섞는 것도 못 해. 요리를 못한다더니 맛이 더럽게 없다고. 그나마 매상 좀 올려주는 손님 잃게 되는 건 사양이야.”
거기서 그 말이 왜 나와! 아르카비스는 비명을 지를 뻔한 입술을 질끈 깨물었다. 분명 한 치의 오차 없는 사실이라 해도 제대로 알지도 못하는 사람에게 대뜸 밝혀지기에는 몹시 부끄러웠다. 그러나 에쉬레스토는 아무 말도 못 들은 양, 아니 그런 건 중요하지 않다는 것처럼 말했다.
“뭐 어때? 그럼 그냥 스트레이트로 따라주면 되지 뭐. 과일 자르는 것도 못하지는 않을 테고.”
“야…….”
“그러면 아무 문제없죠?”
돌아보는 눈이 장난스럽게 웃는다. 아르카비스는 에쉬레스토가 오늘 아주 작정을 하고 왔다는 것을 더 모른 척 할 수 없었다. 그러면 어쩔 수 없지. 원래 계획에서 아주 달라진 것도 아니고. 아르카비스는 그간 바 테이블 안에서 어깨 너머로 본 대로 에쉬레스토를 칸막이 쳐진 개인실로 안내해주었다.
“드디어 그 귀한 얼굴 좀 보네요?”
“…….”
머릿속을 스쳐지나가는 상념은 많았지만 아르카비스는 그 중 한 가지도 말로 꺼내지 않았다. 개중 명백한 것은 이 사람도 분명 저를 만나는 걸 노리고 있었나 하는 것이었다. 그야 며칠 째 불러내라고 난리를 쳤던 걸 생각하면 저쪽도 뭔가 궁리한 것은 있었겠지만. 아르카비스는 도통 그 이유를 찾을 수가 없었다.
발더가르트의 에쉬레스토는, 아르카비스 브리제펠트라는 사람을 아예 존재조차 모르고 있을 텐데.
“다시는 이런 억지 안 부리셨으면 좋겠습니다.”
“흐음. 저랑 단둘이 보고 싶어 하는 눈치 엄청 보내시길래 바로 승낙해주실 줄 알았더니.”
에쉬레스토는 오히려 짓궂게 되물었다. 할 말이 없어진 아르카비스는 평소 에쉬레스토가 주문하는 주종의 병만 늘어놓았다. 나열하고 보니 정말 턱없이 줏대 없는 광경이 펼쳐졌다. 작은 칵테일 바를 테이블에 옮겨 놓은 것 같은 정도의. 아르카비스도 에쉬레스토가 이미 선금을 잔뜩 치렀기에 보틀 째로 몇 병이나 갖다 써도 된다는 것은 알고 있었다. 그렇다 해도 이다지도 낭비할 것까지야. 그러나 아르카비스의 생각이 어떻든, 에쉬레스토는 그 중의 하나를 들어 멋대로 병을 열었다. 그리고는 얼음을 채운 두 개의 유리잔에 조르륵 따랐다. 라벨은 잘 보이지 않아도 개중에 그나마 낮은 브랜디 종류를 골랐는지 달콤한 향이 확 퍼졌다.
잠깐, 잔을 두 개?
“건배.”
아르카비스를 향해 한 쪽 눈을 찡긋한 에쉬레스토가 술이 찰랑 흔들리는 잔을 쥐어 테이블에 놓인 남은 잔에 챙 부딪쳤다. 아르카비스는 마냥 떨떠름한 얼굴을 했다. 술은 잘 하지 않는다고 굳이 말을 해야 할까. 아니면 근무 중에는 술을 하면 안 된다고 말을 할까. 어느 쪽이든, 결국에는 자기가 하고 싶은 대로 할 것이 분명하지만. 그가 뻣뻣하게만 서 있자 에쉬레스토는 뭘 하냐고 묻는 듯 고갯짓을 했다.
“저는…….”
“안 마시겠다던가 따분한 소리 하려는 건 아니죠? 같이 마셔주시면 물어보시는 것도 솔직하게 대답해드릴 건데.”
생각지도 못한 말을 던지고 에쉬레스토는 먼저 잔을 기울여 한 모금 삼켰다. 그 모습을 멍하게 눈으로만 쫓던 아르카비스는 퍼뜩 정신을 차렸다. 차라리 이편이 좀 더 나을지도 모른다. 본래 받은 명령도 그것이었고. 쓸데없이 주변을 파서 맴맴 돌기만 하는 것보다는. 한 번 결심이 서자 손에 쥔 잔은 퍽 가볍게 느껴졌다. 그대로 쭉 들이켜자 씁쓸한 과일 향이 압 안 가득 들어찼다. 썩 좋은 느낌은 아니었다.
“여기에 오는 건 좋은 선택이었네요.”
“어째서?”
“저에게 존댓말 쓰는 당신을, 비스를 볼 수 있었으니까.”
아, 지금 이걸로도 취해버렸던 건가. 아르카비스는 마치 잠에서 확 깨는 것 같은 기분을 느끼며 눈을 깜박였다. 분명 그럴 리가 없는데, 에쉬레스토가 수줍은 듯 웃은 것 같았다. 자기 뒤를 캐려고 접근했다는 걸 알았다면 분명 가만있지 않을 인간이. 경계해야 하는 것이 옳을 것이다. 그럼에도 그는 좀처럼 붕 뜨는 기분을 가라앉힐 수 없었다.
“존댓말? 그게 뭐 대수라고.”
최근 아르카비스는 뒷조사를 명령 받은 바 있었다. 시한이 딱히 정해지지 않은 무기한 의뢰나 다름없었지만 이러한 종류의 일은 되도록 빠르게 처리하는 것이 그의 철칙이었다. 기분도 덜 껄끄럽고. 그러기 위해서 고르는 노선은 최대한 밀착해서 접근하는 방향이었다. 쉽게 들킬 것 같지만, 주된 목표물은 매사 의심과 허무 속에 빠져 사는 편이었으니 그 점을 이용하면 의외로 될 대로 잘만 굴러갔다. 혹여 이르게 들켰다 해도 이미 제 약점을 아르카비스에게 쥐어 준 다음이라 그 때부터는 회유가 아닌 협박 노선으로 갈아타도 되었다.
인간성이라 할, 인간이 인간으로 태어나 가지는 공통적인 특성. 아르카비스가 가장 먼저 배운 것도 그것이었다.
그러나 에쉬레스토에 대해 말하자면, 아르카비스는 어느새 그에게 휘말리고 있는 자기 모습만 발견할 뿐이었다. 처음 대화를 주도한 것은 분명 이쪽이었으나 다시 보면 질문을 하는 쪽은 에쉬레스토가 되었고 아르카비스는 거기에 대고 멍청하게 대답을 해주고 있었다.
이 주점에 대해서도, 한 번 잘못 언급했다가 아르바이트를 겸해서 파트타임으로만 일하고 있다고 둘러댔던 게 사흘 전이었다.
“낮의 비스라면 절대 이런 모습은 안 보여주실 테니까요.”
지금이라도 독소 분해 기능을 켜는 게 맞지 않을까. 아르카비스는 혹시나 싶어서 분위기를 맞추겠다고 기능을 꺼놓기로 한 결정을 이제와 후회하게 될 것 같았다. 확실히 그는 다른 모습으로 에쉬레스토와 먼저 관계를 형성했었다. 에쉬레스토와 같은 학교에 편입을 이유로, 똑같이 학교 주변의 아파트에 이사를 했다고 핑계를 대고. 뻔한 사유였지만 그렇다고 눈에 띌 것도 아닐 터였다.
“……지금은 뭐, 돈 내고 가게에 들어온 손님이니까.”
“아하. 돈만 받으면 뭐든 하신다?”
“그게 그렇게 되나.”
찰랑, 빈 잔이 다시 채워졌다. 이상하다. 아르카비스는 아직 자기가 어떤 질문도 하지 않았다는 것을 확실히 인지했다. 그러나 에쉬레스토는 멋대로 두 개의 잔을 채우고 자기 몫의 잔을 들고 다시 한 입에 홀짝 털어 넣었다. 하여간 이 녀석은 제멋대로지. 또 다시 주도권을 빼앗겼음을 깨닫지 않을 수 없는 아르카비스는 눈을 찡그린 채 주홍빛 술이 넘실거리는 잔을 손에 쥐었다. 한 입에 삼키기에는 어쩐지 너무도 차갑고 동시에 몹시도 뜨겁게 느껴졌다. 눈앞에서 종잡을 수 없는 웃음을 짓고 있는 녀석처럼.
“그래서. 저한테 흥미를 느끼신 것도 돈을 받은 것뿐이어서? 그것뿐이라면 조금 서운할 것 같은데요.”
“서운해? 네가?”
“왜 아니겠어요?”
나름대로는 제 순정이 짓밟힌 기분도 느끼고 있는데. 에쉬레스토가 한숨처럼 말을 내뱉었다. 아르카비스는 무심결에 코웃음 칠 뻔했다. 누가 자기 기분을 거스르면 두 배로 되갚아줬으면 되갚아 줄 인간이. 서운하긴 뭐가. 순정은 무슨. 그는 이번에는 스스럼없이 먼저 자기가 비워버린 술잔에 술을 따랐다. 어이가 사라져 비어버린 자리만큼 채웠다. 에쉬레스토는 그걸 보고도 말리지 않았다. 그저 손에서 잔을 굴리며 아르카비스가 하는 모습을 지켜볼 뿐이었다.
“칼에 찔려도 피 한 방울 안 나올 것 같은 게.”
“그랬어요? 비스가 보는 저는 그래요?”
“아닌 것처럼 말하지 마.”
“아니라고는 못하겠네요. 그래도 비스에게는 최대한 잘 해주려고 노력했는데.”
많이 티 났나? 따위의 말이 들렸다. 아르카비스는 거의 웃음이 터지기 직전이었다. 그게 어디 감춘다고 감춰질 종류의 것인가. 기실 에쉬레스토의 밑바닥 본성에 대해서는 따로 알아볼 것도 없었다. 그를 아는 사람들 모두가 한 마음 한 뜻으로 똑같은 말을 증언해줄 테니까. 게다가 에쉬레스토가 직접 아무 일도 아닌 양 무마시킨 사건을 봐 버린 것도 몇 건쯤 될 것이다. 제대로 모든 정황을 본 것이 아니라 확실하지는 않더라도.
라고 해도, 사실 에쉬레스토가 저질렀다 하는 일들은 전부 다 합쳐도 온갖 인간 군상을 봐온 아르카비스에게는 비교적 가벼운 일에 속했다. 그 정도의 돈을 받고 뒤를 캘 만한 인물로는 느껴지지 않았다. 명령을 받은 이후로 끊이지 않은 위화감이 다시금 고개를 들었다. 물어보기로 한다면, 어쩌면 지금이 가장 적기가 아닐까? 아르카비스는 떨리는 손에 힘을 주어 술병을 조심스레 잡았다.
“내가 보기에는 뭐, 너는 그냥 돈 좀 있다고 주변을 휘둘러보려는 어린애같이 보일 뿐인데.”
“오. 그건 비스 기준으로는 칭찬인가요?”
“칭찬이겠어?”
“어쨌든 최소한 최하점은 아니라는 거겠죠.”
밑도 끝도 없이 혼자 착각하면서 에쉬레스토가 히죽 웃었다. 그 못난 얼굴을 본 아르카비스는 꼭 그만큼 얼굴을 찡그렸다. 짜증스럽게 흘깃 째려보았다. 하나하나 거슬리다 못해 이제는 에쉬레스토가 얼음만 담긴 잔을 시끄럽게 잘그랑잘그랑 흔들기만 하면서 손에서 놓지 않는 것도 짜증이 났다. 같이 마시자더니 왜 채우지도 못하게 흔들기만 하고 있는지.
빤히 이쪽을 관찰하듯 쳐다보는 저 눈빛도 아르카비스는 마음에 들지 않았다. 별것 아닌 얘기를 나누다가도 어느새 에쉬레스토는 저런 눈을 하고는 했다. 관찰해야 하는 입장이 되어서 관찰 당하는 것은 여간 불쾌한 수준이 아니었다. 호기심으로, 아니면 어떤 흥미를 갖고 보는 눈이 아니었다. 그보다 더 지독한, 끔찍한 무언가가 도사리는 눈빛이었다. 말로 표현하자면 이쪽을 낱낱이 벗겨내 나신으로 서게 하는 것 같은 수치심을 느끼게 만드는 그런. 넋 놓고 있다간 한 입에 집어 삼켜지고 말 것 같은 긴장감까지 들게 했다.
아르카비스는 여전히 에쉬레스토에게 자기가 아무 의미도 없는 사람이라 생각했다. 그것이 얼마나 큰 착각인지 여전히 깨닫지 못하고.
“나에게 네가 어디쯤에 있는지가 왜 중요해?”
“그러게요. 왜일까?”
“어차피 이 일만 끝나면, 어차피…….”
아르카비스는 처음으로 혀가 꼬이는 게 어떤 것인지 깨달았다. 말이 생각대로 잘 나오지 않았다. 빌어먹을 술. 의심스럽게 여겨지든 말든 그냥 제정신으로 서 있게 분해 기능을 켜놓을 걸 그랬어. 뻐끔뻐끔 내뱉는 숨이 뜨거워서 목이 탔다. 얼음이 녹아 생긴 수분이라도 삼킨다고 그는 빈 잔에 고인 물을 입에 털어 넣었다. 한 모금도 안 되는 그 물로는 멍해져가는 정신을 깨우기는커녕 후들거리는 다리를 가눌 수도 없었다.
“아…….”
기울어지는 줄도 모르게 무너지는 몸이 우당탕 바닥으로 추락했다. 무게가 중력에 이끌리는 그대로 바닥면과 부딪쳤을 몸에 얼얼함도 와 닿지 않는 게 비단 술기운 탓만은 아닌 듯했다. 아르카비스는 더운 몸에 닿는 서늘한 손길에 느릿하게 고개를 돌렸다. 일부러 그러려던 게 아니라 그 조금 움직이는 것조차 마음대로 되지 않았다. 그의 눈앞에는 이토록 가까이 마주한 적이 있었던가 싶을 정도로 세세하게 보이는 하늘색 머리카락과, 이 순간에도 냉철하게 빛나는 시트러스빛과 물색의 눈동자가 있었다. 마주한 얼굴 사이가 한 뼘도 되지 않을 거리에서 오가는 숨결 중 과일향이 느껴지는 방향은 일방적이었다. 오로지 아르카비스가 내뿜는 숨에서만 달큰한 향이 났다.
속았다는 것을 알아채도 긴장감이라고는 한 톨도 느껴지지 않는 것도 술기운 탓일까.
“제가 놔 드릴 생각이 없다면요?”
“……뭐?”
“비스가 제게 관심을 둘 이유가 사라지더라도, 제가 비스를 놔 주고 싶지 않다고 한다면. 어떡하실 건데요?”
에쉬레스토가 하는 말은 분명 뚜렷하게 잘 들렸다. 그럼에도 아르카비스는 자기가 들은 말을 하나로 연결지어 이해할 수가 없었다. 흐릿한 머릿속에서는 아무려면 어때, 같은 생각만 들었다. 어쩐지 나른해서 생각하기도 귀찮았다. 말로 하는 것도 귀찮았는데 에쉬레스토는 그의 속내를 어떻게 알아들은 모양이었다. 아르카비스는 귀에 대고 킥킥 웃는 에쉬레스토의 목소리를 들었다. 아무래도 좋아요? 그 소리가 무척 간지러워서 그는 에쉬레스토에게 뺨을 비비듯 고개를 끄덕였다.
“약이 너무 효과가 좋네.”
반만 써도 됐겠는걸. 술 때문에 더 그런가. 에쉬레스토가 하는 혼잣말을 자장가처럼 흘려들은 아르카비스는 무겁게 내려앉는 눈꺼풀을 들어 올리지 못했다.
Arcawies was embarrassed. Since working at a bar, something different from what was promised has happened in a row today. He named who? me? Here is not that kind of a bar. “Him? Arcawies can’t even mix alcohol. He said I can’t cook, as he say his cocktails doesn’t taste like alcohol. I won’t let you lose even the customers who raise our sales.”
Why did you say that! Arcawies bit his lips tightly just before he screamed. Even if it was a fact without a single error, it was very embarrassing to be revealed immediately to a person who did not even know it properly. But Ashresto pretended he did not hear anything, or it did not matter at all.
“Whatever? Then he just pour it straight. You could cutting fruits for customer at least, aren’t you?”

The eyes that look back smile playfully. Arcawies could not have pretended not to know more that Ashresto came with great intentions today. Not bad. It has not changed much from the original plan. Arcawies guided Ashresto to a partitioned private room as he had picked up in the bar table.
“Would you finally show me your precious face?”

There were many thoughts that passed through his head, but Arcawies did not bring up any of them. The most suspicious point was whether Ashresto was looking for a meeting with him. Considering that he had been asking owner to call out Arcawies for a few days, maybe he had something in mind. Although Arcawies could not find the reason.

“I hope you don’t force like this again.”

“Cheers.”
Ashresto winked one eye at Arcawies, grabbed one glass and clinking into the remaining glass on the table. Arcawies still looked bitter. Do I have to say that I don’t drink well? Or should I tell you not to drink while on working. Either way, he was sure Ashresto will do what he wants in the end. As Arcawies stood stiffly, Ashresto shook his head as if asking what he was doing.
“I…….”
“For God’s sake. You are not going to drink or say something boring, are you? Well, if you drink with me, I would answer for you honestly whatever you ask.”
Throwing an unexpected remark, Ashresto tilted his glass first and swallowed it. Arcawies was chasing the figure with his eyes, suddenly came to his senses. This way might be a little better. That is the order he was given. It is much better than just wandering around him and getting a lot of useless information. Once he made up his mind, Arcawies felt the glass in his hand very lightly. “Because I could see you, using honorifics to me, Wies.”

But also his ironclad rule to deal with this sort of thing as quickly as possible. It feel less awkward. To do so, the route he chose was to approach the target as closely as possible. It seems easy to be caught, but until now, the target usually requested has been living in doubt and futility, so if he take advantage of that point, it unexpectedly flowed as Arcawies wanted. Even if he was caught early, they had already given their weakness to Arcawies, so he could transfer to a threat line, not conciliatory.
Humanity, a common trait that humans are born into. That was the first thing Arcawies learned.
But when it comes to Ashresto. Arcawies only belatedly found himself caught up in Ashresto before he knew it. At the first time to lead the conversation was definitely here, but looking back, the person asking the question was Ashresto, and Arcawies was responding stupidly to that question.

Like a guy with an elusive smile in front of his eyes.
“So. Is it only because you got paid that you were interested in me? I guessed I had a little hurt.”
“Hurt? Did you?”
“Why would not I did?”
I also feel like my pure love has been trampled on. Ashresto uttered a sigh. Arcawies almost snorted unconsciously. If someone goes against his feelings, he will pay me back twice. Hurt? What are you talking about? What do you mean your pure love? In this time, Arcawies poured his drink into an empty glass without hesitation. He filled the empty spot in the absurdity disappeared space. Ashresto did not stop Arcawies when he saw that. He just rolled a glass on his hand and watched Arcawies was doing.
“You look like you won’t get a drop of blood even if you’re stabbed.”
“Are you sure? Would I look like that on you?”
“You can’t talk you’re not.”
“Absolutely, I can’t say no. But I tried to be as good as I could to you, Wies.”
Was it too obvious? Arcawies heard whisper like that. He was about to burst into laughter. The kind of thing this could not going to hide from somewhere. In fact, there was nothing anymore to know about Ashresto’s underlying personality. Everyone who knows him will testify the same thing with one heart. “It seems to me that you’re just, uh, a kid trying to swing around cause you have some money.”
“Oh. Is that a compliment by Wies’s standards?”
“Does it sound like a compliment?”
“Anyway, at least it’s not the lowest point.”
Out of context, deluded to himself, Ashresto grinned. Seeing the unsightly face, Arcawies frowned just as much. He glared irritably. It was annoying one by one, and now too much annoying for Arcawies not to let go of the glass containing only ice, shaking it noisily.
